Christmas Eve - Still Beautiful, Still Pertinent, 498 Years Later

Dear Friends,

This was written on Christmas Eve, 1513. Every year I read it again and marvel at how meaningful it is now. I couldn't say anything better. And so, I share this with you who are my friends and Beloveds....

I salute you. I am your friend, and my love for you goes deep. There is nothing I can give you which you have not. But there is much, very much, that, while I cannot give it, you can take. No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in it today. Take heaven! No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this present little instant. Take peace! The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in darkness, could we but see. And to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look!

Life is so generous a giver. But we, judging its gifts by their covering, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the covering, and you will find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love by wisdom, with power. Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel’s hand that brings it to you. Everything we call a trial, a sorrow or a duty, believe me, that angel’s hand is there. The gift is there and the wonder of an overshadowing presence. Your joys, too, be not content with them as joys. They, too, conceal diviner gifts.

Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty beneath its covering, that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage then to claim it; that is all! But courage you have, and the knowledge that we are pilgrims together, wending through unknown country home.

And so, at this time, I greet you, not quite as the world sends greetings, but with profound esteem and with the prayer that for you, now and forever, the day breaks and shadows flee away.

I am sincerely grateful, at this stage of my life, to be able to say THANK YOU for everything that has happened to me. All of them. The painful ones as well as the sweet and joyful ones. Everything and every person has been a source of something that has brought me a more expanded understanding of Love, Truth, Harmony and Beauty, and a greater ability to appreciate and savor the sweetness of life.

Where was God on 9/11?

I watched this remarkable special Frontline program on PBS a few nights ago. I was hoping it would be re-broadcast today, on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, but it is not on the schedule of my PBS station. However you can watch it online - here or at www.pbs.org.

It's a fascinating study of human nature, about how various people's faith / religion / spirituality was either damaged or strengthened by the events of 9/11. I found it both very interesting from a scholarly perspective, observing human nature, and very heartful and touching from the perspective of compassion. It is a two hour documentary - worth every minute, IMO. It takes a few minutes to load, but loaded a lot more quickly than I expected. Click on the picture or on the link below the picture. Diverging Paths - Some Thoughts about Community

There are three major sources of Support, Wisdom, Love, Truth and Beauty in my life…. sources of Communion in the secular sense of the word. They are the Dances of Universal Peace, the Michael Teachings, and my own local “home” community. And going on simultaneously in all three there have recently been very similar events taking place, all within the context of online communications via Yahoogroups, including a local yahoogroup that I moderate, a Ning community, and some overlapping activity in Facebook discussions. These three similar situations all involved one member who was communicating in ways that others found to be rude, abusive, arrogant and manipulative. The ones who were behaving in those ways also felt that they were “right” in what they said, and that the responses they received from others were – yes – rude, abusive, arrogant and manipulative. We are such mirrors for each other!

In all cases, the final outcome of the situations have been that the person perceived by others in the community to be behaving abusively had to be removed from those groups, because they refused to honor the requests from others for attitude adjustments, mediation, or simple good manners – the Golden Rule of treating others as one wishes to be treated.

It has been a challenge for those making the decisions to remove those persons from the groups because in all cases, the desire or goal of all three groups is the development of unity, cooperative community sharing, and the raising of consciousness. We are all practicing Agape to the best of our ability. So we are faced with the conundrum of how to treat one who is behaving like a spoiled child throwing a temper tantrum, realizing that those persons are probably very unhappy, possibly psychologically damaged individuals who need healing, and the necessity – and indeed even the right – to protect ourselves and the extended family of our community – from further anger, hurt, disharmony, and emotional abuse.

One person used the analogy of having a nice party in your home, and in comes someone who starts fighting with your guests, yelling insults and denouncing or even threatening the other people there. In that case we would all most likely choose to escort that person to the door, in order to protect ourselves and our families from an abusive and perhaps even dangerous person.

Some people felt that those angry people should be allowed to continue to “rant on” in the name of freedom of speech. But what good would that do? It would simply bring everyone in the community into a state of disharmony and discomfort.

I believe we are called upon to love every being to the best of our ability. I believe that means we wish that person well, hoping they will find their way to being happier, more easy-going people, and we offer to help if they are open to being helped. I believe it’s appropriate to pray for those who are angry, belligerent and rudely abusive. That would be the practice of unconditional love. I don’t believe unconditional love means unconditional acceptance of all behaviors. I believe we have the right to remove abusive people from our homes, our families or our community groups, for the greater good of the whole.

Those who are behaving in ways that are damaging to others may not realize what they are doing, but they are, nevertheless, adult human beings, and free-will beings, who have made choices that have damaging consequences for themselves and others. They are responsible for their own choices, whether those choices were made consciously or unconsciously, based upon previous psychologically damaging events in their own personal history.

These days we are trying to behave in loving ways towards all people – but in practicing that goal, many of us have lost the ability to establish healthy boundaries around ourselves. It’s OK to say NO! I will not allow myself (family/community) to be treated abusively!

That is the reverse image in that mirror of life.

Sometimes tough choices must be made and we must take responsibility for our own well-being, instead of allowing ourselves to be the victims of another person’s hostility.

Messages from the Non-Physical

Sometimes I get messages from the non-physical… and it often comes in the form of music. This happened a couple of weeks ago, and I love it!

I have to preface this story by telling you that the CD player in my truck had been dying a slow death…. and at this time it was gasping it’s last. It would hardly play at all, and when it did, it sounded like it had bad static…. it was apparently losing the ability to read the discs. I turned it on when I got in the truck to see if it would work. It played a few lines of a song, skipping a lot and sounding very scratchy, and then went silent. I left the power to the player on, because it also powers the clock, and I journeyed forth toward Prescott, AZ, a drive of about an hour and 15 minutes, where I was going for a Summer Solstice event.

About 45 minutes later, after exiting from I-17 onto Hwy 169, I passed one of those places on the side of the road where there had been a wreck involving one or more deaths, and the family had put up crosses and other mementos of the loved ones they had lost. There were three crosses, and I knew it was a recent crash scene, because those crosses had not been there the last time I went to Prescott, about 2 weeks previously.

Those roadside memorials always touch my heart, and so I turned my head to look at them. I’m very sensitive to energy, and I felt my head snap in an energetic jolt that told me the spirit of at least one of the victims was still hanging around the crash scene and was trying to get my attention. I said a prayer, asking Jesus (since there were crosses there) to bless these recently transitioned souls, and the families and friends who loved them. And I asked that if any of them were still clinging to the Earth plane that they be guided to the Light.

Shortly after that, I turned onto Hwy 69, and guess what? My poor CD player suddenly burst into song, playing “Brand New Angel,” by Jeff Bridges, a sweet poignant song about a man who had just died.

“…Open the gates, welcome him in, ‘cause there’s a brand new Angel…”

And it played it beautifully. All the way through. No static, no skipping. Sweet and complete.

And I took that as a sign that my prayer had been heard, and this soul who had noticed me paying attention to the crosses had been escorted to the Light, or to what he or she believed to be Heaven.

As I was marveling about that, the song ended and another one began! This was another song about a newly deceased man. This song has no religious symbolism, but is also quite poignant -- “Moonlight Shadow,” beautifully sung by Maggie Reilly. The words to this one are from the perspective of the girlfriend of a man who has been shot and “carried away by a moonlight shadow.” She wanted to communicate with him, but “she couldn’t find how to push through.” And I understood that this second recently deceases crash victim was powerfully missed by a wife or girlfriend.

Again, I was awestruck by this, and when this song ended, another one began! This time is was a Buddhist chant, the Medicine Buddha Mantra, chanted by Khenpo Pema Chopel Rinpoche. And I felt that this third victim was more spiritually oriented, rather than specifically Christian, and perhaps wanted to send healing energy to the families and friends who were missing them.

By this time I was on the Pioneer Parkway, and as this third song was ending, I saw some large pieces of debris in the road, which had probably fallen off a construction vehicle, and my attention was diverted to safely detouring around them. As I was doing that I missed my exit….. and so I was traveling on to the next opportunity to exit and turn around, or considering alternate routes, when the Universe served up some humor for me, in the form of a fourth song, “29 Ways,” by Marc Cohn. “I got 29 ways to make it to my baby’s door….” This cracked me up and I laughed out loud!

All four of those songs played perfectly! And then the CD player went silent again – and has not sung a note since.

The Universe works in mysterious – and poignant – and humorous ways!

The Bathing Suit

I recently discovered that my favorite bathing suit had disappeared. I liked it….. I wouldn’t say I looked good in it, but it was beautiful. Black background with magnificent flowers of many tropical colors. I just liked the fabric, and it was comfortable. And it’s gone. I don’t know, I can’t explain that. It’s vanished into a parallel universe, apparently.

So, now that hot weather is upon us, and I do like to cool down in outdoor water in the summer, I had to go to Wal-mart (yikes #1) to buy a new one. As a “well-rounded woman,” looking over the possibilities (yikes #2) and trying them on (yikes #3) were an exercise in maintaining my sense of humor and self-worth in the face of that no-nonsense mirror. ‘Nuff said.

I did finally find one I like….. I am now the somewhat shocked owner of a bathing suit with a skirt. Hmmm. Never thought I’d say that! But I have to admit it actually does look better on me than my previous mysteriously vanished suit.

And the whole experience reminded me of this piece of humor which came to me by e-mail a couple of years ago. I don’t know who the author is, but it gave me some giggles. I hope you enjoy it!

The Bathing Suit

I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and humiliation known as buying a bathing suit. When I was a child, the bathing suit for the woman with a mature figure was designed for a woman with a mature figure. Boned, trussed, and reinforced, those swim suits were not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a darn good job.

Today, stretch-fabric bathing suits are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure chipped out of marble. The woman with a mature figure has little choice. She can either front up at the maternity wear department and try on a floral costume with a skirt and come away looking like a hippopotamus that has escaped from Fantasia - or she can wander around any run-of-the-mill bathing costume departments and try to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluoro
rubber bands.

What choice did I have? I wandered around. I made my choice and disappeared in to the small chamber of horrors known as the fitting room.

The first thing I noticed about the bathing suit was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The lycra that goes into bathing suits was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets by a sling shot. And it comes with the bonus that as long as you can lever your body into a lycra suit, you can protect your vital organs from shark attack; the reason being that any shark foolish enough to take a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer from jaw whiplash injury.

I fought my way into the first suit but as I twanged the last shoulder strap in place, I gasped in horror. My bosom had disappeared. I found one cowering under my left armpit. It took a little longer to find the other - flattened beside my 7th rib. The problem is today's suits don't have bra cups.

The mature woman is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed hump. I realigned my speed hump and turned to the mirror to make a full-view assessment. The suit fit all right. Unfortunately it only fit those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out of the top, bottom, and sides. I looked like a lump of playdough wearing an undersized piece of cling wrap. As I tried to work out where all these extra bits of me had come from, the sales girl poked her head around the curtain. "Oh, there y'all are," she gasped.

"Yes, they are ALL me," I replied, looking at the extra bits. "What else have you got?"

I tried on a crinkled cream one which made me look like designer tape. I tried on a floral two-piece which made me look like an oversized napkin in a napkin ring. I struggled into one of leopard skin with a ragged frill and ended up looking like Tarzan on an off day. I donned a black one with a net midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning, and I tried on a pink one whose legs were so high cut I would have needed to wax my eyebrows to wear it!

Finally - success. I found the one that fit. A two piece with a short style bottom and halter neck top. It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge friendly.

I bought it. When I got home I read the label: "Material may become transparent in water." I am determined to wear it. I just have to learn how to do the breaststroke on dry land.

The Silence of the Stars

A friend shared this poem on Facebook and I found it so beautiful and touching that I wanted to share it with you, too.

I touched you once again,

in a dream, last night.

You laughed and looked at me

turning into the most beautiful,

firey Phoenix I could ever imagine.

I literally cried out in ecstasy at

your blazing reality,

dancing like a frantic puppet on

a rubber band, my mind

just left me and burst into

a million million stars

spangling this universe.

When I awoke, my mind was clear,

and my heart clean and silent.

I had my coffee,

and dressing I gathered some

flowers and walked to the

place we had lain you,

all those years ago,

when youth had not yet quite flown.

I stopped, unbelieving.

The hole was open and

the grass round about was burnt,

and blackened.

I heard my name and spun about,

seeing the Phoenix behind me,

firey and majestic.

The flowers fell from my fingers,

and I dropped to my knees as the

bright wing encircled me.

"I am fire! I am immortal! we dance

again!" Like intertwined

comets we shot into the heavens,

our joy bursting and trailing

out behind like a wedding train of stars.

An old man was found

next to his wife's grave,

flowers scattered next to his body.

The thing that the EMT told no

one, was that when he looked

into the old man's face,

his eyes were full of stars.

Songs, Prayers and Tears

Such a beautiful and sad world we live in right now. One of my FB friends just posted that there is now a complete meltdown.

All afternoon I've been listening to incredibly beautiful songs, and seeing incredibly beautiful and poignant videos of Japan, and the compassion, loving kindness and miracles that are happening in the midst of this incredible devastation and catastrophe. It's almost overwhelming.

If you haven't already, check out this video by Miten and Deva Premal, portraying the "elevation of the human spirit in times of such overwhelming and inconceivable destruction." I cried all the way through it. Such beauty, such grief. Almost overwhelming.

Deva and Miten wrote: ..."the baby in the pink snuggly being smiled at by the soldier was found in the wreckage 2-3 days after the tsumani and was reunited with her father....one of the biggest miracles to date..." And I read elsewhere that the man seen floating on some debris at 4:42 had actually floated nine miles into the ocean, and he was found by rescuers. Amazing.

I've become more empathetic in the last few years, and it's been a challenge to feel all these feelings of overwhelm and fear and just awestruck wonder at how bizarre it all is... and to let those feelings rise and fall, like the waves of the tsunami... and return to peace. For me, grieving is necessary. I don't know, perhaps I am grieving for some who don't know how, or who don't have time to grieve in the necessity of just getting through the day, when their entire lives have been devastated. In addition to the request for prayer from Dr. Masuro Emoto for Noon Thursday, which you have probably seen, I offer this prayer request sent by a Japanese Monk a day or two ago. As a person who loves to sing, this one especially touches my heart:

The damage of the earthquake in Japan is devastating. Unable to cool down the reactor, we are facing a possibility of nuclear transplant explosion. Please join our prayer. Feel free to forward this prayer request to anyone. It would be great if more people can pray.

Here is a translation of a message/oracle from the Ise Shrine in Japan:

After sunset we need strong power of prayer. Please let me deliver the message to as many as possible. We can stop this earthquake with our prayers, but right now the nuclear plant is in danger. Please heal the suffering, sadness, anger, worry about nuclear plants. Please do not think that this accident will bring justice.

Please care for each other. The energy toward conflict and fight is also fueling the things happening right now. Please stop the conflict and stop the fight and change the worrying voice to the power of prayer. Please pray that as many people as possible can be saved.

We will be O.K. If our hearts start connecting with each other the earth will be healed.

There are the sounds/vibrations that can release the karma of earth. Anyone who can make a prayer sound, anyone who can do reiki, anyone who can do long distance healing, please direct your energy to the center of Japan. The exact location is above the Hachiro gata, Akita Prefecture.

If you can sing, please sing. Humming is fine too. Let the earth listen to the sound.

Please send gratitude to the earth. If mother earth! wakes up, everything will stop. The word Song/Sing writes in Japanese Kanji - small possibilities support a big lack. Please send your prayer to the Earth to wake up the Spirit.

I will be in meditation after the sunset. I will pray for the light shining in the sky even in the darkness. May everyone be safe. Thank you for supporting my heart at this very difficult time. Gratitude for our life.

If you have ever lost anyone dear to you, or if you have been contemplating death for any reason, I recommend watching this interview.
